In general, yes, but it’s through ignorance. Even though the UK has a reputation of being animal lovers, when it comes to cats, some people have the outdated idea that they can more or less look after themselves. The idea of keeping your cat indoors is, mistakenly, seen by some as cruel, neurotic/smothering and unhygienic. Cats are loved and hated equally in Britain. Some see cats as vermin, defecating in their gardens, raking through their rubbish and generally being a nuisance – fighting and calling during the summer months. The risks of letting your cats out in the UK are the same – Traffic, disease/injury from other cats, risks from other people through poisoning/air gun. We have the same issues with spaying and neutering and over population of our re-homing charities such as the RSPCA and the Cat’s Protection League.
