Is it mandatory to reserve a name when constituting a company or non-profit legal person?
No. Only the name research report (rapport de recherche de nom) is mandatory for companies and non-profit legal persons applying for constitution or a name change pursuant to the Companies Act. You can also produce your own name research report, free of charge, if you go to the Doing a name research report page.
