Is it mandatory to have an “instructor rating” to teach people how to fly?
Any private pilot can take friends with them and let their friends take the controls, this is perfectly legal under part 91. There are, however, two problems with doing this. 1, you must have a commercial license to accept any kind of compensation for your time. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to pay to teach one of my friends how to fly. 2. You must have a CFI to allow the student to log the experience, you also must have a CFI to sign the student pilot off to solo or go for a check ride. If the student hasn’t logged any hours they can’t go for a check ride anyways so that’s a moot point. I often times took student pilots with me when I was building time, I made them pay for half the flight and I would let them fly a little bit. I benefited because I had someone to share the costs with and they benefited because they got low cost experience.
