Is it legal to send unsolicited email?
In the US, many states (including California) as well as the Federal government are passing laws, such as the “CAN-SPAM Act of 2003”, that govern the sending of unsolicited email messages. Generally these laws define what constitutes an unsolicited email message (usually absence of a pre-existing relationship) and what you are required by law to do including such things as providing a valid sender email return address, labeling messages as advertising, and allowing recipients to remove themselves from mailing lists.
