John did not recognize Jesus earlier in this book in Revelations 1:9-18 even if he spent three years with him and also saw in in the tranfiguration. To be fair Jesus is able to hide his appearance. Mark 16:12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country.
