Is it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving in the state of New Jersey?
A jurisdiction-wide ban on driving while talking on a hand-held cellular phone is in place in 6 states (California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Utah, and Washington) and the District of Columbia. Utah has named the offense careless driving. Under the Utah law, no one commits an offense when speaking on a cellphone unless they are also committing some other moving violation other than speeding. The law in 6 states (Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) specifically authorizes a locality to ban cellphone use. Localities in other states may not need specific statutory authority to ban cellphones. New Jersey’s fleet of passenger vehicles has been trimmed again. The Corzine administration announced Friday that 445 more vehicles have been taken out of service this year and will be sold at auction. The vehicles were used by employees in various state departments and judged unneeded through a recent review ordered by the governor. Officials say the recall will reduce the state’s annual maintenance and fuel expenses by an estimated $1.1 million. The state expects to net about $500,000 once all the vehicles are sold. The Governor’s Office says the latest vehicle reduction puts the state’s passenger vehicle fleet at 9,671, the lowest level since 2004.
