It is illegal to pitch a tent on the beach in California–in some areas. However, many areas will allow you to pitch a tent on the beach. Public and private campgrounds as well as state parks that have tent sites on the beach and many will allow you to make reservations. In some less environmentally sensitive areas, you are allowed to camp on the dunes.
