I think you need a special permit to have a monkey as a pet in California.

You would have to go to the Wildlife dept, in your city, and get some type of permit…. And….No, it is not illegal, I had one that slept on my couch and drank beer and did Tequila shots all day…not anymore. (This was a human monkey.

California is one of the states that ban private possession of monkeys and other nonhuman primates. Read California’s Wild Animal code to find that owning, importing and possessing monkeys is illegal in the entire state. Exceptions are only granted to zoos, museums and universities after a hearing and issuance of a permit.
