Is it illegal to access internet content that is geographically IP restricted using a proxy and encrypted VPNs?
More and more, internet content is restricted by geographical IP detection (ability to associate a net user’s IP address with the country is based in for instance). This fairly robust technology and there are vendors of such geoIP targeting software that boast 99.5% accuracy. Now if your home country’s online TV programs are not licensed to their online broadcaster with “world” broadcasting rights (which they are rarely), the only way is to pause as a user located somewhere else than you really are. Current Internet protocols were not made to effect these types of country restrictions (it was once called the “World Wide Web” after all) and they therefore allow this sort of bypassing using a proxy and VPN (virtual private network encrypted tunneling).
