Is it healthier to drink mineral water than tap water?
Processes commonly used by water treatment plants to disinfect water include the addition of disinfectants such as chlorine to inactivate or kill micro-organisms. Chlorine and other disinfectants can combine with naturally occurring organic matter in the raw water to produce chlorination disinfection by-products such as the so-called trihalomethanes (THMs). THMs are believed to potentially increase the risk of some cancers and to provoke adverse pregnancy outcomes. Mineral waters are not chlorinated and are therefore better in taste. Their mineral content is usually higher than the one of tap water, bringing more health benefits.
