Is it harder writing songs or instrumental music?
Words have always come easy to me – I don’t really struggle with them too much. Whatever I think at first, I just put it down and that ends up being the song. It’s real quick – and it still is like that. The process of writing songs is mysterious to me. It’s hard to talk about without sounding too esoteric, but it is just that –you know, weird and spacey. To me, the whole process of art is a kind of spiritual practice. It’s a form of meditation; it’s a form of communion with your spirit; it’s like a seance. It’s all those things, but if you say it in an interview, you sound like an ass – but that’s what it is, so if I say anything than that, I’m bullshitting. Is it important for you to keep writing both types of music? I think the whole thing is fascinating because of the continual evolution – including, like, I’m coming back to instrumental music again now. It’s always like a matter of keeping things fresh and exciting for you, and I think then you are in the spirit of rock and roll.
