Is it fair to compare M.S Dhoni with Adam Gilchrist?
More to the point….it would be unfair not to! Gilchrist is clearly the benchmark of a great wicketkeeper batsman with a long track record of consistency. Prior to him the best were Alan Knott and Rodney Marsh. While they may have been marginally better glovemen (though that is debateable as neither had to keep to the amount of turn that Warne produces), Gilchrist is the better all round player and would edge them out in any all time world eleven. But his day is near done! And all wicketkeepers will be judged against his benchmark. Future replacements in Aussie team will be as are current glovemen in other teams. The fact that Dhoni (and Sangakarra) are exciting dashing batsmen means that they are closest to Gilchrist in comparison. However, neither can claim to be the new benchmark till they have a record as consistently strong as Gilchrists’ over the next few years.
