Is it fair to call an AAD plant processing MSW a material and energy recovery facility – that is – a MERF?
Yes. That is a good way of putting it. The pre-digestion component recovers recyclable materials in addition to preparing the biodegradable fraction for digestion. And the IBR process yields a methane-rich biogas, which in turn can be used variously, such as for boiler fuel, or to generate electricity or other energy products such as pipeline quality gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
