it’s hard to say for an individual style; it is more dependent on the instructor. i got my black belt in karate in three years, which is rather quickly, but in my dojo a first degree black belt simply means it’s time to train harder. i don’t know how much the presence of kata affects the time it takes, b/c for hapkido i have heard it takes 3-5 years (or more, or you may never earn it). it should never be easy to earn a black belt, otherwise it is meaningless. there’s not really a set time that it should or should not take, it depends on the meaning of the black belt. if it is the ultimate achievement, then it can take a lifetime. if it is just another beginning for a martial artist, then it may take only a few years.
