Is it disrespectful to chant the Buddhas name whilst getting dirty and sweaty at work?
It’s an interesting question. Personally, I chant (silently and/or softly) all day. I chant in the shower, waiting for the subway, on the subway, walking to work, at work, during a quiet meal, etc. For me, it’s a practice not only of chanting and obtaining merits, but also a practice of daily mindfulness. Since I chant formally every morning, chanting during the day seems to help bring me back to the mindfulness of my morning practice. However, this is just my opinion. If you ask me, what I do is not disrespectful. Some masters might disagree. Some might think it is disrespectful to chant with a dirty mouth after a meal. Others might think it’s disrespectful to chant without an altar. Who knows? But I also think we have to account for cultural differences. Eastern masters might be offended if you raise the bottom of your shoe towards them. I am heavily influenced by Eastern philosophy and ideas, but I’m still American (i.e. uncouth).
