Is it correct that lining paper should be hung horizontally?
Lining paper was never intended to be painted over. It’s sole purpose was to give a good surface for vertically hung wallpaper and to that end it is hung horizontally as this is stronger (cross lining). Somewhere along the way some bright spark decided to paint lining paper and others following hung it vertically. Contrary to common belief lining paper doesn’t iron out the imperfections in a wall and meticulous filling and sanding are usually better and quicker. The only time I use lining paper prior to painting is if the texture of the previous emulsion is very bad, uneven, messy and I want a blank canvass so my emulsion has an even, virtually no texture. There are different grades (thickness) of lining paper. The golden rule when hanging it is never to overlap at all as the light will cast shadows and accentuate the defect, but a few millimetres gap can be filled with paint or filler after the first coat of emulsion.
