Is it Censorship to Require Rating Stickers on Books to Warn About Inappropriate Material?
When contemplating the idea of adding a rating sticker to books, one must consider the motivations behind doing so. Adding a rating sticker to books would certainly change the industry in a big way. Gone would be the days of marketing sex, violence, and rock ‘n roll to our nations youth through the use of the written word. No longer would publishers be given free reign to market inappropriate materials haphazardly. When deciding upon a marketing plan, we would have to consider who would be reading the book. Many people in our society would consider this censorship. In a manner of speaking I suppose it is. How is it any different than applying ratings to movies and music? More importantly, is it not just as important? To apply rating labels to movies and music, while neglecting to do the same to books means that our society considers books less of an influence upon our children.
