The CD-R specification is published by Philips and Sony in the Orange Book, available from Philips. I believe it was first published in 1988. The Orange Book now consists of several parts, and the latest editions have even abandoned the use of the term “CD-WO” in favor of “CD-R”. • Orange Book Part II: CD-R Volume 1, Version 3.1 (Dec 1998) — Includes 1x, 2x and 4x speeds. • Orange Book Part II: CD-R Volume 2, Version 0.9 (Dec 2000) — Multi-Speed. Includes speeds up to 16x. • Orange Book Part III: CD-RW Volume 1, Version 2.0 (Aug 1998) — Includes 1x, 2x and 4x speeds. • Orange Book Part III: CD-RW Volume 2, Version 1.0 (May 2000) — High Speed. Includes speeds up to 10x and a CAV (constant RPM) operating mode. “Orange Book Part I” refers to CD-MO, a magneto-optical technology which I won’t be discussing, and does not appear to be available from Philips at this time. Regrettably, I don’t have a copy of any of the Orange Book documents, and their content does not seem to be mirrored in
