Is it better to purchase a SpyderCube or a WhiBal Digital Gray Card?
First, let me say that it depends on how CRITICAL it is that you have perfect color? I have found the WhiBal card to be perfectly neutral in color and because it is flat, it is much more portable less likely to be damaged or broken. At the same time, if your color needs are not in the “Perfect” arena, and the color just needs to be close, then the cube works just fine for that. It is really nice also that it has a “black hole” for the deepest blacks, has white, gray, and black areas, and a nice small chrome ball for catching specular highlights and miniature sized reflections. It also has a nice tripod socket for mouthing on 4 inch tripods, or any tripod (1/4″ threads) bigger than that. It has a string as well to be able to hang it from objects. The SpyderCube certainly has a “cool” factor to it as well. But it is a small plastic cube that is liable to be crushed fairly easily. I am also disappointed that the gray colors are NOT perfectly neutral. They are off by just a few points with
