Is it best to get a surface piercing or dermal procedure for cleavage piercings?
Dermal anchors work much better for sternum piercings than surface barbells do. Surface piercings in that area will almost always reject and can leave pretty ugly scars when they do. Dermal anchors can also reject, but typically have a higher success rate if the piercer knows what they’re doing. Pain varies from person to person. No one can tell you how YOU feel pain. Same goes for scarring – it depends on the person and the situation. Some anchors scar, some don’t. Some people will try to tell you that dermal anchors are permanent, or that they never reject. Neither is true. Dermal anchors can be manipulated out of the body without surgery, although in some cases a piercer may need to use a small needle to encourage the jewelry out. They can also be prone to rejection if they get snagged or bumped a lot.
