Is it bad to mix alcohol and energy drinks?
Alcohol is a depressant. Energy drinks contain stimulants like caffeine, taurine and ginseng. Powereade and Gatorade contain electrolytes, which are salts. Mixing alcohol and salts is no more dangerous than alcohol by itself (so no worries with Powerade or Gatorade). However, mixing depressants of any kind with stimulants of any kind can be trouble. Depressants slow down your bodily functions, while stimulants speed them up. Instead of cancelling each out, your body reacts to both, so it tries to speed up and slow down at the same time. This puts great stress on your organs, particularly your heart. While people do it all the time, it’s not a good idea. You can die, and the chances increase with the number of drinks you have in a sitting, the frequency that you do this over time, and if you have any underlying cardiac conditions–which you may not even know about..
