Is it appropriate to spend a lot of time drilling on basic math facts?
Drill refers to repetitive, non problem-based exercises designed to improve skills already acquired. Drill may be effectively used when the students have been taught a strategy and know how to apply it to solve problems. Once a skill is in place, drill is appropriately used to increase the fluency or automaticity of the skill. However, it is never appropriate to use drill as a means of helping students learn.
