Is it appropriate for upper elementary students to take out picture books?
I encourage children to take out books that they are interested in, because true readers read all kinds of books. Certainly, upper elementary students should have a chapter book that they are currently reading, but if they wish to supplement that with a picture book, I have no objection. However, I do limit the checking out of certain picture books to upper elementary students. Many picture books today deal with sophisticated themes and prose that can be appreciated by both upper and lower elementary students.
