Is it appropriate for grandparents to offer monetary rewards for grandchildren to write letters to them?

No, it is definitely not appropriate. Its bribery. You should not have to bribe your grandchildren to write letters, they should want to do it because they care about you and know that it would mean the world to you. If your grandchildren need to be bribed then I would have to say that their parents have not taught them to respect you the way they should. Maybe you should have a talk with their parents. They are your children after all! Grandparents often give their grandchildren coins for their piggy banks or $5 for that skateboard their grandchild is saving for. But to think that grandchildren would need to be paid for sending their grandparents a letter describing the events of their lives, is despicable!!! Give them money when you visit them and help them save up for a coveted item, but please don’t bribe them. Its sending a very wrong message.

No. Buying children or grandchildren off is never appropriate. If the parents cared at all they would encourage their children to write to the grandparents. The basis for it should be love.
