Not fake. They went. They left behind some laser retro-reflectors that we still use today to measure the exact distance to the Moon. When Armstrong made the first steps, the Moon was over the Pacific. The TV signal we saw in America had to come through the Parkes radio-telescope in Australia. This means that the Soviet Union also received the signal on their radio-telescopes. They know how to tell where a signal comes from (we all know how to do this since the early 1930s). If Armstrong had not been on the Moon at the time, the Soviets would have known right away and they would have told everyone (they were not our best friends at the time). — Even the Japanese and the Chinese are going to the Moon (with un-manned probes for now). And soon, India as well. It is not that complicated (it is simply expensive). The Van Allen belts are not powerful enough to kill anyone, as long as you don’t spend too much time there.
