Is it acceptable to vent a flammable liquids cabinet into the duct system for a fume hood?

A3. Yes. Venting a flammable liquids cabinet into the duct system for a fume hood is not prohibited by the Fire Code. In our opinion such a system would be acceptable provided the following conditions are met: • The duct from the flammable liquid cabinet to the fume hood consists of a material that will maintain the fire integrity of the cabinet. (Schedule 40 steel pipe is one material that will meet this requirement.) • Flash arrestors are installed at the opening into the cabinet. • None of the materials stored in the cabinet are incompatible with the materials used in the fume hood. (Note that venting anything into a fume hood used for perchloric acid is unacceptable.) • The fume hood can handle the additional air volume requirements. • The fume hood ventilation system shall be designed, operated and maintained such that vapour released from the flammable liquid storage cabinet shall not be permitted to accumulate in the fume hood or escape into the room in concentrations sufficient
