Is it a wrist fracture or sprain?

Based on the position you mentioned, it might be a fractured scaphoid. In that case, you should get an x-ray done right away. CT might also be required should the x ray be negative as scaphoid fractures are tricky to see on xrays and people have missed it. Scaphoid is a bone with poor blood supply and if the fracture is not treated promptly, the bone might die and lead to loss of function of the thumb, a serious enough complication to warrant medical attention. A fall on outstretched hand may also cause other fractures/ligament tears as well, and a thourough x ray and physical examination should be taken up till the shoulder. A lot would also depend on how old your daughter is. Generally, a younger child below 12 yrs old, is more likely to tear her ligaments. Just get the doctor to have a look just in case. And just because the limb is moving doesn’t mean that there’s no fracture there. The fracture may have not involved nerves.
