Is it a stupid idea to apply to business management courses without having done A level business…?
Most of the good universities prefer you not to have done business at A level as they then have to spend much of the first year ‘unteaching’ you the irrelevant/ overly simplistic stuff you have been taught at school. Business is not a subject like English or maths where you need prior knowledge of the subject to study it at degree level – many schools don’t even offer business A levels, so not having done one will in no way put you at a disadvantage with admissions tutors. If you are worried about being clueless about the subject compared with students who have done business A levels, do what I did (I was in a similar situation – applying to do a politics degree without the A level) and get out a few undergraduate level business textbooks from the library to read through. Once you are accepted on a course, you could also email the department (or ask at an open day) to find out if they have any recommended books to prepare for the course – this will also show you’re keen. Good luck!
