I have Nexus birch doors. I believe (as far as I can tell) it is a real wood veneer over particle board. The edges are finished with what looks like solid wood, definitely not a veneer tape because it is rounded around the edge of the wood. There is a finish on it, though, that will probably repel the stain, and if you sand it off you might risk destroying the thin veneer layer.
