Even though she may be exempt, she should still be required to work at least 40 hours a week for her pay. The company can still dock her pay for anything less than 40 hours. She could also be terminated if she is told that she has to be there at a particular starting time. It all depends on company policy. You also left out a lot of information. Does she do any work for the company outside the office (from home) or after hours? I’m exempt, and Monday through Friday, I only put in about 30 to 35 hours in the office. But, I also do a lot of work from home after hours and on the weekend. At the end of the week, I usually put in between 45 to 50 hours, sometimes even more. On a side note, there is a new work philosophy that some companies are exploring called ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment). This is a practice where results only are measured, and hours worked are not. If you can get the work done in 30 hours instead of 40, you still get your full pay.
