Is International relations a respected degree?
The question implies a comparison between the prestige of an IR degree vs. a degree from another discipline. IR is a relatively young discipline, and therefore it doesn’t have the same amount of prestige as the more established disciplines. Some potential employers fully accept it, but others see it as “not a real discipline.” A bachelor’s degree in IR also has the same limitation as degrees from the other social sciences: it does not immediately qualify you for a field-specific job in the real economy the way an engineering degree or an education degree would. You don’t see jobs ads that say “Wanted: IR graduates for work in IR factory.”
Depends on where you get it. Not only universities on a whole have a reputation but the degrees themselves also do. If a school ranks highest in business degrees quality which gives it agood reputation, that doesn’t mean you’ll make a lasting impression with a degree from sociology from that school. International relations is a good and broad degree, which opens a lot of career options for you. Your bachelors will probably include most of these following subjects: economics, political science, sociology, history, business etc. A bachelors in this is a great idea, when you get to masters you will have a well-rounded knowledge and you can make a better informed choice on what to study further.
