Is insertion of the Paragard IUD painful?
I had my Paragard inserted yesterday and it was extremely painful. I was terrified of having it done, due to going with a friend to get her Mirena put in – she passed out from the pain, and I passed out as well. My doctor understood my fears and prescribed Vicoden and Xanax for me for before the procedure. I took 2 5/500 Vicoden and 1 1mg Xanax. I was fine at the beginning, but it quickly went downhill. The speculum is larger than the one used for a PAP smear, but not all that uncomfortable. Then they disinfect the cervix and vagina, that wasn’t a big deal. Next came the teniculum, and she warned me there would be a “pinch” and it felt more like a stab. Then she tried to use the sound, and said “we might be done now if I can’t get this in.” She went to get a nurse to find dilators. She then had to dilate me, which was very painful. The sounding gave me hard cramps, but nothing more than I have with a bad period. After the sounding, she realized that the inserter wasn’t going to fit, so
I have terrible reactions to hormones. So my husband and I decided to give this a shot and keep it in for a year or so while we wait to have kids. I had to put this little pill inside my vagina the night before to soften my cervix (because I’ve haven’t had kids yet) and took 800mg of Advil an hour before my appointment. They give three shots of novocaine normally to patients having the IUD inserted, but since I am so sensitive to foreign chemicals, they only gave me two. It was a pretty uncomfortable experience, and when they finally put in the IUD I was told it feel similar to a labor pain. It was way worse then any period cramps I had experienced. After a few minutes, it subsided and I went home. Then, I was horizontal for the rest of the day and night in a lot of pain with heating pads and consistent 800mg of advil.
