IGETC Certification is one way of satisfying the lower division general education requirements before reaching a CSU, UC or selective private university. The IGETC is not an admissions requirement. Completing it is not required, nor does it guarantee admission to the campus or program of choice. If you choose to follow the IGETC, you must complete it before you transfer; otherwise you will be required to satisfy the specific lower division general education requirements at the university you will eventually attend. In most cases it is advised that you complete the IGETC. There are some majors and schools who do not suggest you complete IGETC requirements. For example, high unit majors such as engineering, containing many major preparatory courses, sometimes suggest that you concentrate on minimum admissions requirements and completion of major courses rather than on completion of IGETC.
