Is identification required for travelers who want to pay with Travelers Cheques or exchange the Travelers Cheques for cash?

In most cases there is no need to present an identification document for travelers, as long as the counter-signature matches the initially provided signature. However, there are general legal regulations that identification may be required for cash transactions above a certain amount (in Switzerland, this rule applies from CHF 5.000 for cash exchange and CHF 25.000 for all other transactions). In accordance with different national guidelines abroad, some banks and shops have other regulations and ask for (photo) identification and/or proof of purchase of the Travelers Cheques even in connection with smaller amounts.
