Is Hungarian the hardest language to learn ?
I’m glad to see the great answers given by Pavel and Tom S. Hungarian is indeed one of the most difficult languages you can endeavor to learn– in fact, it may very well be one of (if not the) hardest languages with over 5 million speakers. As was mentioned, the Hungarian system of morphology (the way in which words are formed) is rather complex, especially in comparison to any Indo-European language (English and Polish are both Indo-European). Many features of the Hungarian language, such as vowel harmony (a system under which a word’s ending may change based on the vowels used in it) and the rigid system of casing, would be completely alien to anyone well-versed in the common languages of western Europe, for instance English, French or Spanish. Hungarian is also the only language on its branch of the Uralic family of languages (Ugric), though Finnish, Estonian and the Uralic languages of the Russian Federation are distant relatives, Hungarian, in reality, has no close relatives.
