Is Huawei guilty?
Do I think Huawei is legally guilty? Absolutely! Is Cisco’s lawsuit an attempt to cripple a strong competitor? Unequivocally! Even after learning more about the weak intellectual property environment in China, I’m astounded at the naivety of Huawei’s leadership. It’s hard to believe they thought they wouldn’t get caught; therefore they must have thought what they were doing wasn’t wrong. But which value system would allow them to reach this conclusion? Let’s examine their actions from a utilitarian view, “the greatest happiness for the greatest number”. They were making customers very happy by selling high quality products that looked exactly like Cisco’s at much lower prices. They were making distributors very happy by allowing them much higher margins than Cisco allowed them. Because more businesses could afford Huawei’s products, more communication products and services could be offered to a larger population, making people who never had telephones before very happy.
