Is HTS assisting the military in combat operations?
Human Terrain Teams (HTTs) do not provide direct support to combat operations. The only military training HTTs receive pertains to personal safety rather than tactical operations. HTTs are assigned as an asset to and work for the Brigade Combat Team Commander. However, HTTs work primarily with units whose primary mission is non-lethal and which provide support to the local population such as medical personnel, Provincial Reconstruction Teams, and Civil Affairs. When working in conjunction with the BCT, HTTs assist the in conducting non-lethal operations by allowing the unit to better dialogue with the population, to understand the population’s political, economic and social needs, and to understand the history of particular tribes and social groups in their area.
