Homosexuality occurs in almost every known species. All species that have been closely studied in all aspects of their lives have proved to have homosexual individuals, which never mate with the opposite sex. This is entirely different to ‘dominance mounting’, which is often seen in animals such as wolves and dogs – both males and females of high rank will mount lower-ranked individuals to show their dominance, but this is not a sexual act. There is no meeting of the genitals – it’s just body language to show who’s boss. Truly homosexual animals will physically mate with their partner in whatever way they can – males will anally penetrate other males, females will rub their vulvas together, and species with cloacas will press them together just as males and females do.
