Is homogenized milk as bad as hydrogenated oil?

Well, sorta. Butterfat, which is what is homogenized into milk fluid, is not good for you and can contribute to arteriosclerosis and a lot of other problems. Homogenization is a mechanical change to the fat globules that naturally occur in milk. It allows the fat to be evenly dispersed and less likely to separate and float to the top. But hydrogenation changes the nature of the molecules – their shapes are changed. Hydrogenation changes the chemical nature of the fats. Similar effects but very different origins. I think the real key is to reduce the amount of fat you consume by drinking low fat or skim milk and don’t eat stuff with trans fat.
