Is Hominy a different type of corn or is it regular corn treated with lye?

0

Regular dried corn treated with an alkali. I have never eaten it, but I heard of it a lot when I was growing up. It was a cheap staple commonly eaten in depression days. Many then not-so-old adults had recollection of such times. Back when people made their own soap from lye, derived from wood ash, there was a lot more lye around and therefore it would have been convenient to make hominy.
