– Miss Wendy Johnson of Belmont, North Street, Nafferton, was one of 20 teenagers who, through a competition in a national newspaper won a visit to the Northern Tennis Championship semi-finals and finals which were held at Didsbury, Manchester on Friday and Satruday. Unfortunately, however Wendy was unable, through personal reasons, to make the trip to Manchester. In the newspaper recently, Major P H Applewhaite, a well-known British tennis coach, stated why he thought Britain was not producing world-class players and he said the youngsters were too glad of a ‘homework excuse’ when it came to finding time for tennis practice. Young tennisers were asked to reply to the Major and the best 20 letters would be awarded with tickets for the tournament.
