Is helium a metal or a nonmetal?
Helium is a nonmetal. But there is a bit more to it than that. It is an inert gas (noble gas) and it is about as far from being a metal as is possible. Elements that are metals start on the left hand side of the periodic table and run across it a good distance. Then transition metals and metaloids. On to the right, we see nonmetals, and helium (He, group 18) is perched on the top right corner of the periodic table – about as far from being a metal as anything can be.
