Is he really the problem of Nigerias electoral system?
Let me say in all honesty that Prof. Maurice Iwu, INEC boss, is not the problem of Nigeria’s electoral system. The problem of Nigeria’s electoral system really has to do with the structures in place leading to the appointment of chairman and other members of the commission. Prof. Maurice Iwu as the chairman of INEC is a captive of the executive. So, if you remove him and put any other person as the head of INEC without first addressing the structural problems bedeviling the system, we’re going to have the same disastrous outcome as we witnessed in past elections. So, we need to make a distinction in terms of the person occupying the post of the INEC chairman and the structures. Maurice Iwu, let me repeat, is not the problem of Nigeria’s electoral system; the process that led to his appointment is what really constitutes the problem of the electoral system in the country.
