This bird is going to require very special attention. First, look at his eyes. If they look very dark, or black it’s a male. If they look sort of reddish brown in the middle (the iris) it’s a female. They are one of the few birds that you can tell the sex without DNA testing. I don’t know if you will ever be able to stop him from picking his feathers. It is such a very hard thing to stop. He has been tramatized so bad. Just be very patient with him and talk sofly to him. You may want to take him to the vet for a check up to make sure every thing is okay. Just let him chill for a week or so. He needs to get used to the new people and surroundings, he may be very defensive. God this is such a shame because cockatoos are some of the sweetest birds on earth. I have an umbrella of my own.
