Is Harry Potter basically a rip off of Star Wars?
In theory, there are a number of similarities between Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker. Both Harry and Luke were orphans sent to live with their Aunt and Uncle. Fortunately for Luke, Uncle Owen just overworked him and didn’t stuff him in a broom cupboard. Both were tempted by the Dark Side, but had the power to withstand and triumph hover it. Both lost their mentors at a time when things seemed most unclear. Mugglenet points out that both were tempted by the dark force that killed their parents, but I don’t necessarily agree. Darth Vader allows Anakin to return before he dies and Padme died from a broken heart, neither was directly murdered by Emperor Palpatine, though he obviously had his hands in their demise. The death of James and Lily Potter was more direct, and though you could say it was caused by Peter Pettigrew, Voldemort still dealt the final death blows to both Potters. There is also the parallel between the two characters best friends being a male and a female with a “thing”
