Hamas is a resistance movement against Israeli occupation of Palestine. It has a military wing and a political wing. The political wing won a majority in the last Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006. Though they formed the Palestinian government at that time, Israel and the US and its allies and its allies refused to deal with this government and instead blockaded Gaza and the Hamas controlled government and launched a campaign to destabilize it. Finally with their puppets in the West Bank they declared another unelected government in the West Bank. The Hamas military wing does the defending of Gaza against Israeli attacks along with other resistance movements. It is not an army however.
