Midnight Commander is under GNU Public License which basically means that you may freely copy, change and distribute it, but that you may not impose any restrictions on further distribution, and that you must make the source code available. This is not the same as Public Domain. For details, the GNU license is included in GNU Midnight Commander source distribution (the COPYING file). Midnight Commander is now officially a part of the GNU project. All the authors of GNU Midnight Commander have given all their rights on the program to the Free Software Foundation.
