Is geology a lonely career? Wednesday May 25, 2005 I’ve been getting good responses to the question raised by the student (see the previous item) who worried about missing friends and family if she became a geologist. One reply had a simple idea based on personal experience: just marry another geologist! Another pointed out that much of the job can be done at home and that good companies make sure their geologists stay in touch with their families. This geologist also had a subtler point to make: your geological colleagues make great friends, and the profession is truly a worldwide family. I can vouch that geologists are gregarious people and that rocks don’t respect borders. Here’s another thing to consider: your friends are those people who want the best for you.
