Is genetically engineered food safe?
A July 24 editorial expressed concern that the Food and Drug Administration is not protecting our food supply from the dangers of unregulated, unproven herbal medicines claimed to have been added to foods. The P-I warns that such additives may be dangerous. I agree that the FDA has the job of protecting consumers and that it would be desirable to determine whether herbal ingredients added to food constitute a danger. However, I am far more concerned about the danger to our food supply from genetically engineered ingredients, which are present in 70 percent of packaged food products as well as in canola, soy, corn, papaya, radicchio, tomatoes, sugar beets, flax, potatoes and other crops. Herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years, but genetically engineered crops are a recent development.
