IS GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD DANGEROUS?
Those that believe genetically engineered foods are dangerous make two arguments: First, that we do not understand the long-term effects of large-scale human consumption, and second—and perhaps the most scary—that genetic engineering may be an irreversible process. What is meant by this? Let’s look at some examples. There is already concern that farmed fish will crowd out populations of wild fish. There is concern that, when genetically-engineered crops are planted alongside natural crops, the genetically-engineered crops will encroach into the natural crop. This happens through natural uncontrollable processes such as airborne, insect-borne, and water-borne seed movement. And once the natural crops are encroached upon, the “stronger” genetically-engineered crop will crowd out the natural crop. Scary, huh?
